The Refuge Playscan only be described as an epic, but for it’s two matriarchs, it means so much more. Listen to Nicole Ari Parker (Early) and Jessica Frances Duke (Gail) discuss killing turkeys, playing elderly women, and channeling their ancestors in this world premiere production.
The Refuge Plays—our first production in the 2023/24 Season—is now in previews at Roundabout Theatre Company’s Laura Pels Theatre! Dive deeper on the production with this episode of “Theatre Talk” with NYTW Teaching Artist Kimberlee Walker and Roundabout Teaching Artist Jeanna Phillips.
Rehearsals are underway for The Refuge Plays, an epic tale that follows one black family over 70 years. This also marks the first show in the 2023/24 season, which is the first season programmed by new NYTW Artistic Director, Patricia McGregor. The show also marks the return to the Workshop for NYTW Usual Suspect and former 2050 Artistic Fellow Nathan Alan Davis.
“When I dreamed of what this job would be, I visioned being able to say yes to audacious and impactful artists like Hansol Jung, Nathan Alan Davis, Mona Pirnot and Moisés Kaufman’s Tectonic Theater Project company. I’m exhilarated by the range of their work that’s simultaneously intimate and epic, rigorous and filled with love. I am humbled to make my first invitations and provocations to our community alongside these singular artists.” –Patricia McGregor
Shondaland talked to four pioneering artistic directors and producers, including our wonderful Artistic Director Patricia McGregor, who are striving to make the theatre field more inclusive. Check out the interview with Patricia, Nataki Garrett, Dominique Morisseau, and Hana Sharif.

We are excited to announce that Patricia McGregor will succeed James C. Nicola as Artistic Director, following a yearlong search led by ALJP Consulting and a dedicated search committee of artists, staff and Trustees. McGregor will assume the role beginning this summer. In an effort to give the incoming Artistic Director time and space to curate their first season and immerse themselves in the community, NYTW productions have already been set through Spring 2023. McGregor’s first programmed season will commence in Fall 2023. McGregor joins Jeremy Blocker, who continues in the role of Managing Director.
