Our innovative artists take participants into their process, offering insights, encouragement and inspiration. Masterclass with Katie O’Neill: Costuming Lights Out

Join Lights Out costume designer Katie O’Neill for a 90-minute masterclass at NYTW exploring how costume design can bring history, character, and Nat “King” Cole’s music to life onstage. O’Neill will walk participants through her research and creative process, sharing how dramaturgy, cultural specificity, and design intersect in her work. From fabric choices to historical references, discover how costume becomes a powerful storytelling tool in Lights Out. Ideal for artists and audiences interested in the deeper layers of theatrical design.

Masterclass with Nikiya Mathis: Hair & Wig Designing Lights Out

Dive into the process of designing the hair and wigs of Lights Out with designer Nikiya Mathis during a 90-minute masterclass at NYTW! Learn all about Nikiya’s artistry, thoughtful research, and her meaningful focus on care and self-advocacy for Black artists and artists of color. With a few styling demonstrations and discussions, discover more about the attention to detail, consultations with actors, and dramaturgical choices that go into designing a show like Lights Out. Ideal for artists, performers, and designers interested in learning more about hair and wig design, approaching conversations about hair, and more.
