Internship
Opportunities at NYTW
New
York Theatre Workshop offers Fall, Spring, and Summer internships in
its Artistic, Management and Production departments. We offer a $50
weekly stipend or academic credit, plus a monthly MetroCard. Interns
are required to work for a minimum of three full days per week, 10am-6pm,
with occasional extra hours for assisting with productions and events.
Although
interns are attached to specific departments and staff supervisors,
they occasionally are asked to fulfill duties or projects for other
departments. This gives interns a taste of multiple aspects of NYTW
and its operations, and we encourage interns with varied interests to
explore them.
Interns are invited to read and evaluate play synopses that are submitted
to NYTW on a regular basis. They are welcome to attend opening and closing
night performances and parties, and ancillary artistic and educational
events such as readings and panel discussions. In addition, they may
be asked to assist during dress and technical rehearsals, and to fill
in as needed with house management and reception.
For all internships, please MAIL, FAX, or DROP OFF your application
form, resume and cover letter to:

the application form for that season becomes available.
Interviews:
Once we have reviewed all of the applications for a particular internship
season, we will contact finalists to arrange interviews or request additional
information. Interviews usually are scheduled within 2 to 4 weeks of
application deadlines. Please indicate on your application form whether
you would be available for an in-person interview at our offices. A
phone interview can be arranged for out-of-town applicants.
Application
Tips:
• Please send only the completed application form, a resume and
cover letter. Letters of recommendation are neither required nor expected.
If you are granted an interview, we may ask you to provide the names
of two references.
• Please take the time to review our website if you are not familiar
with our work to gain an understanding of NYTW’s work, mission,
and history before completing your application.
• Please refrain from calling our offices unless we have called
you. Instead, use e-mail to ask questions and/or follow up on your application.
• We review internship applications three times per year, not
on a rolling basis. Applications for a particular internship season
will not be accepted before that season’s application form becomes
available online. All applications will be reviewed and interviews arranged
after deadlines have passed. Sending in your materials early shows interest
and initiative, but unfortunately we cannot grant you early consideration.
• International applicants must secure an Exchange Visitor or
Foreign Student visa to work at NYTW. Inquire with the U.S. Embassy
or the consulate with jurisdiction over your place of permanent residence
about visa application procedures. International applicants must take
full responsibility for arranging their travel, travel documents, and
housing accommodations.
Artistic
Internships
Fall and Spring Artistic/Casting Interns are required to work on Mondays
due to our Mondays @ 3 reading series. All Artistic/Casting and Literary
Interns are strongly encouraged to attend Artistic staff meetings on
Friday mornings.
Artistic/Casting Interns work closely with the Artistic
Administrator and Casting Associate, providing administrative support
for the Artistic staff and Casting Director. Responsibilities include
helping to facilitate and house manage our Mondays @ 3 reading series
in the Spring and Fall; helping to coordinate and attend meetings and
events for the Usual Suspects; filing headshot submissions; assisting
and sitting in on casting sessions for productions, readings and workshops,
as well as Actors’ Equity general auditions; and providing general
administrative support to the Artistic department. Interns participate
in Friday morning Artistic staff meetings. Summer Artistic/Casting interns
assist in the coordination of NYTW’s annual summer residencies
at Vassar and Dartmouth Colleges, which includes arranging artists’
travel.
Literary Interns, under the supervision of the Literary
staff, read scripts, write reader reports, and, on occasion, correspond
with writers regarding individual works. Interns contribute input to
the selection of plays for the Mondays @ 3 reading series, and prepare
for the Thursday Suspects Studio reading series by maintaining communication
with Usual Suspects, gathering program information and project development
history, and providing support on the evening of the reading. Literary
interns also participate in Friday morning Artistic staff meetings.
A strong literary and/or dramaturgical background is preferred for this
internship.
We won’t be seeking a literary intern for
summer 2010
Education Interns work closely with the Director of
Education and Artistic Administrator, helping to facilitate school residency
programs, mentoring workshops and public programs, such as AfterWords
and panel discussions. Interns participate in Friday morning Artistic
staff meetings, help to coordinate (and attend) meetings and events
for the Usual Suspects, NYTW's extended community of artists, help to
facilitate Mondays @ 3 readings, provide support for the Mind the Gap
playwriting workshop, and provide general administrative support to
the Education and Artistic departments.
Management Internships
Marketing
Interns assist with mailings, filing, errands, press kits,
research, and ticket requests, and provide general administrative support
to the Marketing & Communications department. Interns contribute
to the long-term project of NYTW's press archive, which entails organizing
and cataloguing past press articles, features, and reviews. Applicants
should be interested in learning about NYTW’s institutional and
production history.
Development Interns assist the Development Department
with special events including opening night parties and benefits, donor
research and gift acknowledgements, database management, grant research,
and general administrative support. Additionally, applicants with good
writing skills may assist with grant writing and the preparation of
proposal materials. Applicants should have a strong attention to detail,
knowledge of Excel, and an interest in fundraising. Completion of course
work in fundraising/development and experience with Raiser’s Edge
a plus.
Production
Internships
Production Management Interns work with the Production
Manager, helping to conduct research in to all aspects of production,
keep track of production and facilities budgets, prepare payroll forms,
take field trips to the theatre's prop and scenic storage units, and
perform general administrative duties. The Production Management intern
works in an intimate environment with ample opportunities for hands-on
learning and contact with top designers, stage managers, and crew members,
including access to all production meetings and tech rehearsals. Applicants
should be extremely well-organized and interested in learning the day-to-day
coordination of all scenic, lighting, costume, and sound needs for NYTW
productions. Knowledge of Microsoft Word programs is a plus, and a positive
attitude and sense of humor are also strongly encouraged.
Technical
Direction Interns assist the Technical Director with carpentry,
coordination of builds and strikes, cleaning and maintenance of spaces,
equipment, and materials, and various errands and administrative tasks.
The Technical Direction intern has the unique opportunity to work at
the heart of an intimate production team, with ample possibilities for
hands-on learning and projects. The Technical Direction intern also
has contact and networking opportunities with top designers and theater
professionals. Interns should have schedule flexibility due to production
schedule. Skills in measurement and the use of basic tools, the ability
to lift 50 lbs., and a valid driver's license are required. Knowledge
of VectorWorks is a plus.
