New York Theatre Workshop is going Green

For 25 years, NYTW has provided a home for innovative theatre artists, and the work that they have created here has helped to shape and make sense of the building blocks of our society. This season NYTW will break ground on its latest contribution to our community’s future: New York State's first certified GREEN urban industrial building. New York Theatre Workshop provokes, produces and cultivates the work of artists whose visions inspire and challenge all of us.

New York Theatre Workshop’s scenic and costume shop incorporates Gold-level standards of green design and construction in accordance with the US Green Building Council’s Leadership in Environmental and Energy Design (LEED) Program. NYTW, as a forward-looking and community-minded institution, took this initiative prior to the passage of Local Law 86. Any new capital work that NYTW undertakes will be planned with green initiatives and leadership in mind.

History

In October 2005, New York Theatre Workshop purchased the vacant building at 72 East 4th Street, a former New York City storage facility, “as is,” from New York City’s Department of Housing Preservation and Development, for the price of one dollar. This extraordinary transaction, in which the city provided six owner-occupied spaces to the Fourth Arts Block (FAB) arts organizations, was the culmination of five years of community organizing and meetings with New York City public officials, with the invaluable support of Council Member Margarita Lopez. These spaces have been preserved in perpetuity for cultural use.

Fourth Arts Block is an association of 13 non-profit cultural and community organizations based on East 4th Street between the Bowery and Second Avenue in Manhattan's Lower East Side. FAB's Members consist of 8 theatre companies, 2 dance studios, a film workshop, a tenant's rights/housing preservation organization, and a low-income housing management company.

The critical mass of cultural groups on East 4th Street make it Downtown's "theatre row,” and home to a diverse range of arts groups with an outstanding record for community outreach, racial and ethnic diversity, artistic exploration, and free and low-cost programs for emerging artists, youth, and the general public. Each year, 160,000 people attend performances, workshops, readings, and classes involving over 1,200 artists on the block.

New York Theatre Workshop is a non-profit organization, and donations are tax-deductible. NYTW is a member of Theatre Communications Group, the Alliance of Resident Theatres/New York, Fourth Arts Block, and the Association of Non-Profit Theatres/New York.

What is a Green Building?

A green building is a structure that is erected using methods that increase efficiency and conservation of all materials used in both the construction and maintenance.

Why Go Green?

New construction and capital maintenance of buildings is responsible for 40% of US energy use and 30% of wood and raw material use. Universally, these factors are main contributors to global warming by generating 30% of CO2 emissions (the most significant climate-changing gas). East 4th Street has been a home to NYTW for nearly fifteen years. Our efforts are meant to preserve our community for years to come.

Nationally, buildings on a daily basis account for:

  • 36% of our energy use
  • 65% of our electrical use
  • 30% of our greenhouse gas emmissions
  • 30% of our raw material use
  • 30% of our waste output (136 million tons annually!)

What are the benefits?

With the completion of the construction process, we will have taken measures to minimize sound, noise, and air pollution and dramatically cut our waste generation and emsions. New York Theatre Workshop is creating a facility that ensures a healthier workplace for our current staff and for future artists. NYTW will continue to maintain and improve our green practices through the use of approved cleaning materials and waste disposal techniques.

Through the implementation of our Green Policy, NYTW is committed to reducing our overall resource consumption. Ultimately, we plan to reduce our:

  • electrical use by 15.6%
  • gas use by 6%
  • water use by 45%

How Will NYTW Be Green Every Day?

We will reduce the amount of energy we consume and use, reuse all of our materials, donating sets, costumes, and props to guarantee few resources are wasted. For example, sets, which have traditionally been constructed of wood, will now be made up primarily of recycled steel, which will again be recycled after the production. Finally, NYTW will recycle or reuse 100% of all eligible materials used in our offices

New York Theatre Workshop's new scenic and costume shop facility will be environmentally sound not only in its efficient construction but also in its maintenance.

What Can You Do?

  • Begin with the traditional reduce, reuse, recycle model to minimize expendable yield, and utilize the following green efforts in day-to-day operations:
  • Reuse office supplies such as file folders and binders, and use discarded documents as scrap paper in place of notepads and post-its.
  • Recycle all excess paper, plastic, wood, and metal waste on a weekly basis.
  • Traditionally-used chemical-based cleaning products that are harmful to employees and the environment should be replaced by Green Seal Approved items. These are made with organic and environmentally safe ingredients.
  • Any construction supplies such as nails and paint should be categorized and set aside to be reused.
  • Lower the wattage of your light bulbs.
  • When renovating your building, utilize green technology.
