NYTW RESIDENT ARTISTS OF COLOR FELLOWSHIPS:
ARTISTIC LEADERSHIP FELLOW

New York Theatre Workshop (NYTW) is now accepting applications for one Resident Artists of Color Fellowship in Artistic Leadership. In a two-year (September 2008 – September 2010), full-time position, the Artistic Leadership Fellow will provide project development support to the Artistic department of an award-winning, nonprofit Off-Broadway producing theatre organization. The Artistic Leadership Fellow will be supervised and mentored by the Artistic Director and Associate Artistic Director and will collaborate with Artistic, Casting, and Literary staff on short- and long-term projects.

The fellowship will last for two years, during which the recipient will work as full-time NYTW staff member at an annual salary of $26,000, with full benefits. All of NYTW’s fellowships are designed to meet the specific interests, needs, and goals of each Fellow.

New York Theatre Workshop’s Resident Artists of Color Fellowship program was initiated in 1999 in order to redress the lack of people of color in high-level artistic management positions throughout the country. The NYTW Artistic staff initially sought to bring early career directors into the organization to work full-time alongside staff members in order to encourage the development of young artistic directors of color. Granting young artists opportunities for total participation in NYTW’s day-to-day creative work gives them a distinct advantage in identifying and pursuing career goals, and beyond gaining broad exposure to the art and business of theatre, Fellows experience the unconventional methods and artistic values of NYTW through their work with a variety of theatre professionals from NYTW’s staff and community of associate artists.

Fellowship duties may include, but not be limited to:

• Provide curatorial, dramaturgical, and organizational support to season projects and summer residencies
• Serve as liaison to NYTW artistic community (Usual Suspects, Companies-in-Residence, Fellows)
• Assist with casting and literary management
• Compile and maintain artistic and project development archives

Interviews will be conducted at NYTW in April.
Final notification will occur by April 30, and those selected must accept/decline by May 15.

QUALIFICATIONS
• Previous theatre experience (directing, producing, writing, and/or dramaturgy experience a plus)
• Interest in pursuing a career in artistic direction or theatre administration
• Excellent speaking, writing, research, and coordination skills
• Ability to manage multiple projects and effectively communicate with a broad range of people

APPLICATION MATERIALS
• Statement of purpose of no longer than one page detailing applicant’s professional goals
• Résumé
• Two (2) letters of recommendation
• A nonfiction writing sample (2 pages maximum). Work samples will not be returned.

APPLICATION REQUIREMENTS
• Applications are accepted by postal mail or drop-off only. No applications will be accepted by e-mail or fax.
• Clearly label each item in your application with your name and “Resident Fellowship.”
• Applicants who wish to receive confirmation that their application has been received must include a self-addressed,   stamped postcard.
• Those applying for more than one fellowship must fulfill all requirements for each fellowship and indicate order of   preference.
• Foreign nationals who are eligible to work in the U.S. may apply.
• Candidates must live or relocate to the New York City metro area for the duration of the fellowship. Applicants
  who live elsewhere must be able to relocate at their own expense.
• Must be available to interview in April in New York City.
• Must be available to attend a 3-day retreat at Vassar College in June 2008, June 2009, and June 2010 (dates TBD).
• Must not be enrolled in an academic institution for the duration of the fellowship.
• Must indicate in statement of purpose any conflicts of interest that may exist during both the application period and   the fellowship period.
