NYTW EMERGING ARTISTS OF COLOR FELLOWSHIPS

New York Theatre Workshop is now accepting applications for the following 2010 / 2011 Emerging Artists of Color Fellowships. Pending funding, NYTW will accept up to four emerging artists, paid a stipend of $1000 for the 2010 / 2011 season. These fellowships would entail a commitment from June 2010 to June 2011.

• Four (4) fellowships total for directors, playwrights, and/or designers of color

Since 1995, New York Theatre Workshop has awarded fellowships to promising young theatre artists of color in order to help them develop their crafts while utilizing the resources of an established nonprofit producing company. The Emerging Artists of Color Fellowship program grew out of NYTW’s belief that a diversity of ideas, experience, and culture is crucial to theatrical innovation. Fellows are given access to rehearsal space, office facilities and equipment, casting assistance, mentoring, and other forms of support as determined on an individual basis. Pending funding, all Fellows will be awarded a $1000 stipend and offered occasional group theatergoing opportunities that may include travel.

We seek dedicated and motivated candidates who wish to develop their talents and skills by participating in a dynamic, artist-centered creative community.

Interviews will be conducted at NYTW in April.
Final notification will occur by April 30, and those selected must accept/decline by May 15.

Application Materials for DIRECTORS

• Personal statement of no longer than one page detailing applicant’s process and goals as a director
• Résumé
• Two (2) letters of recommendation

Application Materials for PLAYWRIGHTS

• Personal statement of no longer than one page detailing applicant’s process and goals as a playwright
• Résumé
• Two (2) letters of recommendation
• A 20-page writing sample. Work samples will not be returned.

Application Materials for DESIGNERS

• Personal statement of no longer than one page detailing applicant’s process and goals as a designer
• Résumé
• Two (2) letters of recommendation
• Work samples from professional or academic productions. These may be submitted as electronic files, slides, or sketches. Work samples will not be returned.

REQUIREMENTS FOR ALL APPLICANTS

• Applications are accepted by postal mail or drop-off only. No applications will be accepted by e-mail or fax.
• Clearly label each item in your application with your name and “Emerging Artist Fellowship.”
• Applicants who wish to receive confirmation that their application has been received must include a self-addressed, stamped postcard.
• Those applying for more than one fellowship must fulfill all requirements for each fellowship and indicate order of preference.
• The term Emerging refers to those artists with minimal or no professional experience.
• Foreign nationals are eligible to apply.
• Candidates must live or be able to meet regularly in the New York City metro area for the duration of the fellowship. Applicants who live elsewhere must be able to relocate at their own expense.
• Must be available to interview in April in New York City.
• Must be available to attend a 3-day retreat at Vassar College in June 2010 and June 2011 (dates TBD).
• Must not be enrolled in an academic institution for the duration of the fellowship.
• Must indicate in statement of purpose any conflicts of interest that may exist during both the application period and the fellowship period.
