New York Theatre Workshop’s Fellowships for Artists-of-Color
Frequently Asked Questions

1. Who qualifies as an Artist-of-Color?
The term “artist of color” is an obtuse term, mostly referring to self-identification by anyone who feels that their experience is NOT the “white America” experience; this could therefore include a wide range of ethnic backgrounds and/or experiences.

2. Can I apply for more than one fellowship?
You can most certainly apply for more than one fellowship: just be sure to indicate clearly which fellowships you are applying for, and also indicate the priority (first choice, second choice, etc). Also be sure to fulfill ALL requirements for each fellowship applied for. Application materials which overlap (resume, letters of recommendation, etc.) you only need to send one copy of.

3. Your fellowship description says that applicants must live in New York City.
I live in _________. Does this mean I can’t apply?
We are more than happy to accept applications from artists not currently living in New York City; however, applicants must be available for interviews conducted in NYC during the first two weeks of May, and also be willing to relocate to NYC or metro area for the duration of the fellowship.

4. Tell me more about this critical writing sample.
The critical writing sample should be something you have written (not necessarily published) which gives us a sense of your perspective as a discerning, thoughtful viewer of theatre. The 1-2 page requirement is a rough guideline for you to interpret accordingly.

5. Can my recommenders send their letters directly to New York Theatre Workshop?
Although it would be great to receive your complete application in one envelope, we understand that this may be difficult regarding the letters of recommendation—therefore your recommenders can most certainly send their letters directly to NYTW. Please be sure that they clearly indicate your name in their letters, and that their letters are sent with sufficient time for delivery by March 26.

6. When do the fellowship sessions occur?
These meetings take place twice per month, and are usually scheduled for weekday evenings or weekend days.

7. When exactly is the June retreat?
Though specific days have not yet been determined for the June 2004 retreat at Vassar College, we do know that it will be for 3-4 days sometime between June 9-22.
